Name and development of town
For the first time Mostar was mentioned in written documents in 1452. In
letters of Dubrovnik citizens, Mostar was described as a small settlement with
two towers around wooden bridge strengthened by chains. Until the Turkish
conquest, Mostar was considered as small and not particulary important place.
Name of the town Mostar was mentioned for the first time in 1469.
A mong all of axplanations of Mostar name origin these two are the most
interesting: Mostar was named after bridge keepers (mostari) of after two towes
which were called "mostare". Mostar strated to develop and short after
it became a centar of Herzegovina. Even before 1592 it has become the seat of
mufti, since 1767 it has been seat of Herzegovinians Orthodox episcopacy and
finally since half of the last century seat of Catholic bishop.
All along, until 1878., Mostar was under Turkish rule although Venetians
tried several times to conquest it. Austro-Hungarian occupation directed the
town's economic and cultural development towards Europe. First World War slowed
down and hardened beats of town heart, but World War II left deep scars on its
face. Many citizens were killed, many buildings were destroyed and damaged.
In 1992 new wave of temptations and sufferance flooded upon town. The most
violent assassination attempt ended in 1995. Crippled and divided, Mostar is
recovering. In spite of deep scars and bad smell of death it illuminates
recognizable warmth smelling on blossom and new life.
